Julie Andrews has won another Emmy for a performance in which she never appears on screen.
The 90-year-old actress won Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for her portrayal of Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s Bridgerton at the 78th Emmy Awards on September 6, 2026. The award was presented during the second of the Emmy ceremonies held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, ahead of the main televised ceremony on September 14.
Andrews won for her work in the Bridgerton episode “The Waltz,” giving her a second consecutive victory in the category. She previously won the same award in 2025 for the Season 3 finale, “Into the Light.”
The back-to-back wins have turned Lady Whistledown into one of the most decorated voice performances of Andrews’ career, adding another chapter to a role that has been closely associated with Bridgerton since the series premiered.
Julie Andrews Takes the Emmy Again
Andrews faced a field largely made up of performers from animated television. Pamela Adlon was nominated for playing Bobby Hill in King of the Hill, Hank Azaria for Gary Chalmers in The Simpsons, Trey Parker for Satan in South Park, Matt Vogel for Kermit the Frog in The Muppet Show, and Steven Yeun for Mark Grayson/Invincible in Invincible.
Andrews stood apart from the other nominees because Lady Whistledown is performed within a live-action drama rather than an animated production. Her narration functions as a character performance even though Andrews herself does not physically appear in the series.
The winning submission, “The Waltz,” continued the show’s use of Lady Whistledown as an elegant and sometimes cutting observer of Regency London’s social world. Andrews’ recognizable delivery has been central to that device throughout the series, bringing a polished authority to narration that can shift between playful observation, judgment and dramatic revelation.
Andrews was not present at the ceremony to receive the award herself. Voice actor Eric Bauza, who presented the category, accepted the Emmy on her behalf.
The Voice Behind Lady Whistledown
Andrews has voiced Lady Whistledown since Bridgerton debuted in 2020. From the beginning, the character was designed around an unusual division between physical and vocal performance.
Within the story, Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan, is the woman behind the Lady Whistledown identity. Andrews supplies the voice audiences hear when Whistledown’s society papers are narrated, effectively creating a separate vocal persona for the character.
That arrangement has allowed Lady Whistledown to exist almost as an omnipresent commentator on the series. Andrews does not need to appear alongside the cast for her presence to be felt. Her narration can introduce scandal, provide context or undercut what viewers have just watched, often giving the character information and authority beyond any individual figure on screen.
Much of that effect depends on delivery. Andrews’ precise diction and controlled pacing fit the refined world of Bridgerton, while her inflection can give otherwise formal language a mischievous or pointed edge. The contrast between the sophistication of the voice and the often scandalous subject matter has become part of Lady Whistledown’s identity.
An Emmy Run Built Around the Voice
The 2026 victory continues a run of Emmy recognition for Andrews’ work within the Bridgerton universe.
She received her first Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance nomination for Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton in 2021. The role later extended to the prequel series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, where Andrews again voiced Lady Whistledown and received another nomination in the category.
Her first victory for the character came in 2025, when “Into the Light” earned Andrews the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance Emmy. The following year’s win for “The Waltz” made the achievement consecutive.
The two awards also contribute to a television career stretching back nearly seven decades. According to the Television Academy’s records, Andrews has accumulated 13 Emmy nominations and four wins. Her earlier victories came for The Julie Andrews Hour in the 1970s and the 2005 television special Broadway: The American Musical, before Bridgerton added two more wins late in her career.
The voiceover recognition has become particularly notable as Andrews has moved away from appearing on camera. While she has indicated that she is no longer pursuing on-screen acting roles, she has continued working through voice performances and other creative projects.
That makes Lady Whistledown more than a late-career cameo. The role has developed into a substantial part of Andrews’ recent work and has now produced consecutive Emmy wins.
Lady Whistledown Remains One of Bridgerton’s Defining Voices
Bridgerton is built around a large ensemble cast whose central characters change as different romantic stories move to the foreground. Lady Whistledown, however, has provided a consistent voice across the series.
Andrews’ performance is also an unusual example of how character voiceover can operate within live-action television. Unlike traditional narration that exists primarily to deliver information, Lady Whistledown has a personality, perspective and place within the story. The audience is not simply hearing an unseen narrator. It is hearing a character whose words can influence the characters appearing on screen.

For Bridgerton, the identity behind Lady Whistledown may belong to Penelope Featherington, but the voice that audiences have come to associate with her remains unmistakably Julie Andrews.
